Michael Crichton and Michael Backes wrote the screenplay, based on Crichton's 1992 novel of the same name.

Rising Sun is an excellent suspense thriller and it is also a call to arms for the US to insist that Japan trade fairly, to stop below cost dumping in order to build market dominance. What Crichton failed to see is that China would soon a quasi-capitalistic economy and would add to Japan's unfair trade practices currency manipulation and total disrespect for intellectual property.
